Advice for young software engineers from a veteran

We at Nallas have been hearing from several young (and not so young) technology professionals worried about their careers, especially heightened by the impending recession and the preponderance of AI. They’ve been in the tech game long enough to see several waves, technologies and predictions pass, and they firmly believe that the current wave we’re seeing is one of immense opportunity, no matter how intimidating it might be to live through it.

To help all the professionals out there who are looking for ways to future-proof their skills and careers, our founder Vangili has consolidated a few thoughts to guide them ahead. His thoughts stem from his long career, in which he has seen several changes, technologies, cycles and yes, economic downturns.

Develop your soft skills

Think about it… what can you do that machines can’t?
– Communicate in just the right context.
– Collaborate with others and uncover new insights and perspectives along the way.
– Work with empathy and compassion.

These sound like buzzwords but they are what will make you stand out from those who rely solely on technical skills. These will cushion you from changing markets and evolving technologies.

Go beyond coding

Develop a low-code/no-code mindset, and don’t be literal in thinking of solutions that can be born from the code you’re writing. ChatGPT can do the actual code-writing but what it can’t do is solve business problems through insights, understand consumer behaviors, and find a way to use tools, technologies and best practices optimally.

Have a North Star

Think of what you want to accomplish and work towards that goal diligently. But mapping that goal isn’t a one-time exercise. Track your daily output and see if you’re on the path towards that goal. However, don’t be afraid to pivot along the way.  Just take a look at how the COVID pandemic caused an immediate change to business models and customer behaviors; skills to support big data initiatives became more important than ever. Events at all scales will continue to demand the agility and flexibility of your skills so keep chugging away towards your end-goal, you’ll achieve a lot along the way.

Learning never ends

Learning doesn’t end once you graduate or learn the ropes of your organization. Things are changing so rapidly that you MUST stay on top of things. One of the most important things you could do for yourself is to learn where to learn. All the tools are at your fingertips and some of the best ones are even free (Youtube being the biggest one). Talk to veterans. Talk to entrepreneurs. Ask people questions. Seek out resources. Experiment.

There’s so much that the younger generation can do and we as an organization are keen to see what they build tomorrow, whether as bright stars in the Nallas family or just out in the world. Nallas started Codozzle for exactly that reason; a platform and community for young coders and software professionals to collaborate, get mentorship, learn and grow. If tech students and early-career professionals are looking to be part of a community of coders learning together to overcome the short-term and limited impacts of recession and AI, you’ll find value in Codozzle, so go join the learning at https://nallas.com/codozzle/.
